Day 4 – Whale Safari & Historic Pirates’ Tour

Giants of the sea · Eco-responsible sailing · Buccaneer history

After breakfast, a day packed with emotion and history. From mid-June to mid-September, the morning is dedicated to an eco-responsible sea outing for the Humpback Whale Safari — one of the rarest wildlife encounters in the Indian Ocean. Each year, between 700 and 900 humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) migrate from Antarctica to give birth and mate in the warm, sheltered waters of the Sainte-Marie channel. The peak observation period runs from July to August, when mothers accompanied by their calves are most active at the surface: full breaches (breaches), fin slaps, blows visible hundreds of metres away.

  • Eco-responsible boat trip — regulated approach at minimum 30 m
  • Excellent sighting chances in peak season (July to September).
  • Breaches, fin slaps, blows — a breathtaking spectacle

The afternoon or Outside season (Oct–Jun), Pirates’ Tour :

  • Le Pirates’ Cemetery, unique in the world, overlooking the mangrove bay
  • Île aux Forbans, the historic buccaneer hideout at the heart of Ambodifotatra Bay
  • The oldest Catholic church in Madagascar, built in 1857

Dinner and overnight in Sainte-Marie.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know

Humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) frequent the Sainte-Marie channel from June to September to give birth and mate. July and August are the peak months, with the highest concentrations. The probability of sightings during this period is excellent. This is unquestionably the best time to choose this tour.

Outside whale season, the safari is replaced by the Pirates’ Tour, an immersion in the fascinating history of Sainte-Marie. Highlights: the famous Pirates’ Cemetery Pirates’ Cemetery, visit to the oldest church in Madagascar, stroll through a fishing village and spice market. All other activities (Île aux Nattes, natural pools, Ampanihy Bay, etc.) remain unchanged — a wonderful experience year-round.

Two options: a domestic flight from Antananarivo (TNR) to Sainte-Marie airfield (SMS), taking approximately 1h30, operated by Air Madagascar and Madagascar Airlines; or a ferry connection from Soanierana-Ivongo (accessible from Toamasina by road). The flight is the most comfortable option. These connections are at your own expense and not included in the tour.

Yes, this tour is ideal for families — it is one of the most accessible tours we offer. Easy physical level, varied and visually stimulating activities (snorkelling, pirogue, whales, pirate tour), seafront hotels with a beach. No long or difficult walks. Suitable from a young age. Children love the pirogue in the mangroves and the climb to the Île aux Nattes lighthouse.

Absolutely. Duration (5 to 10 days), accommodation level (standard, comfort, prestige), addition of a scuba diving day, combination with the East Madagascar Tour (Andasibe, Pangalanes Canal): everything is adaptable. Write to us at contact@lemursafari.com for a free quote within 24 hours.

Consult your doctor before departure. Generally recommended for Madagascar: hepatitis A & B, typhoid, tetanus. Anti-malarial treatment is advised for Sainte-Marie (moderate-risk coastal area). Malaria is preventable with appropriate precautions: repellent, covering clothing in the evening, preventive treatment.

Deposit of 30% by bank transfer or PayPal upon booking confirmation. Balance due 30 days before departure. No unsecured payments — all payments are processed via written booking confirmation.
